Program Review Committee: Service Credit

Committee Members: Mike McCoy, Liz Burlingham (Scribe), Connie Doty, Chris Spera (Chair), Deb Sandholm, John Rylander, Max Gaumer, Ed Heckert(?)

Meeting Date: Aug. 29th

In our first meeting we discussed schools in which a similar service program existed. Nancy G. has information from Chicago schools which she gave to Max Gaumer. It is believed that Dixon, Newman and Oregon have programs also. We discussed that the service opportunity should be for Seniors only, as there seems to be a "lack of value" in the Senior year. If students were interested in an academic area they could work with a teacher here, or in the district, as long as it was mutually agreeable. Community options were discussed also. As the program develops, more students could be added. We felt it should not be a requirement. We've had students volunteer as lab assistants in the past to help with pig lab according to Connie D. Mike M. stated band students do volunteer a great deal with school performances and community parades.

As a committee we would develop the criteria to participate in the program, but a coordinator would be necessary. Students would be required to submit a plan and make the initial contact with the person or agency they would want to volunteer their time with. Our plan is to gather information from other schools and look at Nancy G.'s info.
