It was felt that one counselor should be responsible for all flex students. This counselor should spend time in the flex classroom trying to identify needs for students.
Possibly, working with an unlimited budget, the school could look into adding more counselors to reach all students.
Drop-Out students need to be identified sooner than high school.
A brief discussion followed on the type of Flex classes offered and how many credits could be earned in flex.
In 2001-2002 Flex credits helped increase graduation rate.
These are a few questions the committee raised:
What is the purpose of Middle School Flex? Is it a dumping ground for behavior students?
Are students held accountable to earn credits in the middle school?
Does Unit 5 offering tutoring for elementary age students who have been identified as trouble students?
There is a drop-out questionnaire that was made and students did fill out, but it was a feeling that it should be dummied down. If students drop-out because they struggle to read, then the questionnaire may be to difficult to follow.
The committee feels it important to look at the questionnaire at the next meeting and revise/edit the questionnaire.
