Tutoring/Homework Center Committee
9/4/02 Meeting Notes
-Today's task- evaluate and refine brainstorm list from previous meeting (given constraints-no money)
Suggestions
-On site during the day may be the best approach to get students. Funding
would be an issue. How can we get an additional tutor (the Neahring/Math
model). We would need a specific place for tutoring to occur. Possible times
from 7:15am to 4:00pm
Off site possibilities - local church, staff w/volunteers, or is there a way to dial
a central number and have this fed out to a staff member on call?
Reopen the Library on wed. evenings (give release time to the person in
charge).
Students as tutors, Sauk or HS students to work at an on site during the day
homework center. Offer credit for student workers or community service
credit. If funding is available pay the students. Elroy will talk to Keith Bos and
the ROE for funding possibilities.
Questions or other Issues-
Is expertise in a specific area an issue? Or would the type of questions be
general enough for anyone to answer?
Do we have a problem with students needing help or just needing a structured
study area with some guidance?
Are most students failing because of lack of effort or they don't understand
the subject matter?
Is there one thing we can do right now to help students???
A homework help center in the library before and afterschool.
Volunteers to serve as tutors (students, parents, staff)
Parent center to coordinate the volunteer list
Monday afternoon to Friday morning 7:30-8:00 and 3:00-3:45
Eventually expand to lunch and every hour of the day
