Fran reported the information she had obtained on "Adopt a Kid", a short-lived program previously undertaken by SHS. Volunteers were more successful than those who were asked to participate. The teachers with the most success were those who were already mentoring students prior to the inception of the program. It was felt that it did not survive because there were no parameters or guidelines.
Rebecca reported that the CWT and work training instructors felt that the employers were already mentoring their students.
John will contact York High School in Elmhurst for information on their mentoring program in which upper classmen mentor under classmen. Kewanee High School also utilizes student mentors. They meet during daily homerooms.
Mrs. Freed and Mr. DePasquale will be contacted to see if students with the BLIND training might be interested in being student mentors. Peer mediators might be another source for mentors. The service credit committee will discuss mentoring for possible credit.
We felt that training would be necessary for both student and faculty mentors. Matt Howze might be a source for training. John has an excellent book on mentoring which he will bring to the next meeting. Other suggestions were a mentor's resource page on the school website with weekly tips for mentors and mentees and having a faculty member work with 3-5 student mentors.
Priority may be given to at risk students as opposed to special ed. students who already have case managers.
The next committee meeting is September 25.
