A Discussion with Linda Kim and Matt Howze -

There has been some confusion as to who is now providing the tutors.

Matt Howze has expressed reservations about providing tutors at this time.

Linda is only able to hire Latino students to serve as tutors through the grant money available to her.

Linda and Matt feel the needs of the high school students showing up to be tutored are beyond the expertise of the tutors being provided by Sauk.

Linda does have federal work study money available for tutors, but she would like to keep the township involved. She may be able to provide tutors in the future but this would require some time for her to assemble a pool of tutors.

Our committee asked if it would be possible for us to identify tutors and refer them to Linda. Her reply was yes this would work as long as they were Latino students.

Matt Howze would also need more time to assemble a group of tutors that would be able to fit what he perceived as our needs.

Suggestions from the committee included setting a ceiling on the types of classes that we would offer tutoring services for. Another possibility would be to set up our program similar to the Middle School's (it is more of a homework club, where students are provided with a structured atmosphere to work on assignments). Yet another possibility would be to offer help in specific subject areas on alternating nights.

If any of these changes were to happen, Matt and Linda both felt they would be able to provide around 4 tutors on the afternoons we needed them. We would be responsible for managing the logistics of the program and training the tutors.

An alternative that was suggested would be to find upper level high school students who would be willing to tutor their peers (they would be paid through township funds and through Linda's PACE grant).

It was decided to move ahead with the program the way it is currently set up. We will find students within the High School who would be able to tutor students at all levels. Students can apply for tutoring positions through the Guidance Office. All teachers can sign students up for tutoring from their computers.
