Ms. Knabe’s Counseling Corner

Kids Are My Business!

My name is Katherine Knabe and I am the Elementary Grant Counselor hired for Jefferson School.

Classroom Guidance Lessons:

Bi-weekly lessons are based on the Second Step Curriculum, needs-based issues, career opportunities, and character education. Classroom Guidance Lessons are 30 minutes long and occur in all rooms.

Small Group Counseling:

Small Group Counseling is available to any student in need by teacher, parent or student self-referral.  Intentional Guidance Groups are created based on relevant data (such as: attendance records and report cards).

Groups available are: Attendance Concerns, Study Skills, Changing Families, Anger Management, Social Skills, ADHD Support, Grief, Making Friends, Deployment Support, or any other current need.

Groups are 15-20 minutes long and meet for 6-8 weeks. Groups are provided during non-instructional times.

Individual Counseling:

Individual Counseling is provided to help the student to find success in school. Individual Counseling is short-term and Solution Focused. Students may self-refer by leaving a note in my mail box. Parents or teachers may request that I see a child in order to discuss a specific concern. Students may be seen without parental consent (up to five times) to help the student succeed in school. If students need more help, I will contact parents for consent to continue seeing them or I will refer to an outside counseling agency.

Parent Support:

A Parent Resource Library is available within the Jefferson School Library. Programs such as “1-2-3 Magic” and “Love and Logic” are available in book, DVD, VHS, and Spanish. Please check out our resources online or come into the school any day 8:00 AM –3:00 PM. There are extended Jefferson Library hours on Mondays (until 5:00 PM).

I am always available to talk with parents about discipline or other student concerns. Please call Jefferson School (815-625-6402) or email me if you are needing anything.
