Lutheran Social Services, 1901 1st Ave, Sterling, 815-626-7333. Family, group, individual, play therapy, substance abuse, runaway help. Sliding scale and insurance only. (Spanish and English)

Sinnissippi Centers, 325 IL Rt. 2, Dixon, 815-284-6611 or 1-800-242-7642, individual, group, family counseling available. Divorced parents program and family centered programs.

YWCA: Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Program, 412 1st Ave, Sterling. Hotline Numbers: 815-626-7277 and 815-288-1011. Programs available for women and children who have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault.

Local Resources for Families in Need:

 

Tri-County Opportunities Council, 405 Emmons Ave, Rock Falls, 815-625-7830. Financial assistance available to those in need or homeless— Rent, energy assistance, weatherization assistance, housing project, Head Start program, and emergency assistance (medication and clothing).

Good Neighbor Emergency Center, 707 1st Ave, Sterling, 815-625-5111. Provides emergency assistance and vouchers for local food pantries. Open Tuesday-Friday, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM.

Whiteside Legal Aid, 224 E. 3rd St, Sterling, 815-625-7409. Provides legal assistance to those in financial need. Open Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM.

Eyeglasses for Kids, 100 E. LeFevre Road, Sterling, 815-625-0400. Student receives free screening for vision at local school. Voucher for eyeglasses provided based on student’s need for vision repair.

Helpful Definitions:

Psychologist:  a person with a PhD in psychology or counseling psychology (doctorate degree) who can do testing, assessments, diagnosis, and therapy to treat social emotional/mental health issues. In a school setting, this person may have a master’s degree and advanced training in testing and assessment.  In a clinical setting, this person has a PhD.

 

Psychiatrist:  a medical doctor (M.D.) who specializes in social emotional and mental health diagnosis and treatment.  Usually this person prescribes medication and follows up with medication management to treat social emotional issues.  However, there are some psychiatrists who also do therapy.

 

Counselor:  a person with a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, (M.Ed., M.A. or M.S.) or social work (MSW, LSW, LISW) who provides counseling and therapeutic services for those with social emotional and mental health concerns.
