Helpful Definitions: Psychologist: a person with a PhD in psychology or counseling psychology (doctorate degree) who can do testing, assessments, diagnosis, and therapy to treat social emotional/mental health issues. In a school setting, this person may have a master’s degree and advanced training in testing and assessment. In a clinical setting, this person has a PhD.
Psychiatrist: a medical doctor (M.D.) who specializes in social emotional and mental health diagnosis and treatment. Usually this person prescribes medication and follows up with medication management to treat social emotional issues. However, there are some psychiatrists who also do therapy.
Counselor: a person with a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, (M.Ed., M.A. or M.S.) or social work (MSW, LSW, LISW) who provides counseling and therapeutic services for those with social emotional and mental health concerns.
