Challand Middle School

Sixth Grade Language Arts

Introduction

Sixth grade language arts covers a wide variety of topics. Our report card lists the class names as Language Arts I and Language Arts II. Basically, that means that Mrs. Nettleton and I get two class periods to teach language arts.

To clear up the grade differences, Language Arts I is what I would call a reading and word study grade. This will include any comprehension or literary device assignments that accompany the short stories and novels we read in class. This also includes any vocabulary exercises and our weekly root word assignment.

Language Arts II covers writing and grammar. We alternate writing projects with studies of the rules of writing. Challand Middle School has been using the 6 Traits model to help students improve writing. The traits are:

Ideas

Organization

Voice

Word Choice

Sentence Fluency

Conventions

Presentation

Each of these is represented to varying abilities in every piece of writing, and we have been trying to improve our own writing by studying and discussing each component.
