Classroom Expectations
Challand Middle School
- A Guide to Classroom Expectations in Core 6‑1-
Assistance: If a student would like some extra assistance with homework or to study for a test/quiz, we will be available to help students after school. If a student receives a D or an F on a test, students will have an opportunity to earn some points back.
Assignments: We believe that homework is an important part of the student’s learning because it reinforces what has been taught in class, it prepares students for upcoming lessons, and it helps students develop responsibility and organizational skills. All assignments are due at the beginning of class and they must be complete and legible. We will also be using the Cornell Notes method to help students study for chapter test and quizzes.
Late Assignments: If an assignment is one day late, there will be a 10% reduction during the first semester and a 20% reduction during second semester. Late work will be accepted up to one week before each grading period (mid‑terms and each quarter). Once a chapter test is completed, no work from that chapter will be accepted.
Make-Up Policy: If a student has an excused absence, homework is still expected to be completed. An extra day will be given for each day of absence. After that time, late charges will be assessed. When a student misses class, it will be his/her responsibility to get the missed assignments, copy the notes, and correct the assignments that have previously been corrected. This can be done during independent work during class, before or after school, or during 8th hour homeroom.
Discipline Policy: We expect the students to follow the three basic rules of our school ‑ "Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be There/Be Ready!" Should a student violate one of these expectations, a "D" slip will be given. After 5 slips, the student will complete a Reflective Form that will be sent home. The student is expected to return the completed Reflective Form the following day. If it is not turned in completed, a classroom detention will be issued. Serious rule infractions, as identified in the handbook, may require an immediate referral to the office. At the beginning of every new quarter, the students are given a fresh start and all "D" marks will be erased.
Email Updates: A very convenient way to get an update on your child’s progress is to send an email to his/her teachers. Please identify yourself and put your child's name in the Subject.
Math Syllabus
- A Guide to Classroom Expectations-
Instructor: Mrs. Shumard
Room: 203
Subject: Math
Materials Required: Textbook, binder, paper, pencil, and agenda are needed everyday and they are expected to be brought without exception.
Assistance: The best time to receive assistance from me would be after school. If students have a quick question about a homework assignment, they may come to my classroom at 7:30 AM if they have a note from a parent or a from a teacher.
If students do poorly on a test/quiz, they have the options to stay after school and earn some of the missed points back. During this time, I will do some review over the content, and the student will retake the questions missed.
Math Notes: Math notes will be taken every day to help students with their daily homework. Students will also be able to use these notes as a reference for all chapter tests, so it is very important that students complete their math notes. The notes will be graded for completeness at the end of each chapter/unit.
Math Assignments: Work must be done in pencil and assignments should include complete solutions, showing all work and using correct labels.
It is very important for students to complete their homework on a daily basis, especially in math, since many math topics build off each other. If a student has 5 missing or late assignments, a 30‑minute detention will be served and parents will be contacted.
If students are absent from school or turn in a late assignment, it will be the student’s responsibility to check the assignment sheet for the missed assignment, copy the notes from a classmate, and correct the assignments that have previously been corrected with the Make‑Up Binder which is located under the overhead.
If a student completes the assigned work during class, it is expected that he/she continues to work on a math activity. Math games, covering various math topics, are located in a black file by the class library.
Math Assignment Sheets: Each student will receive an assignment sheet at the beginning of every chapter. These assignment sheets will have the page number, the assigned problems and the date the assignment was given. If a student is absent from class, he/she will know what assignment he/she missed by looking at the assignment sheet.
Math Adventures!: About every two weeks particularly on Fridays, students who have all their work turned will be able to participate in Adventures! During this class period, students will be able to expand on the lessons previously learned, perform experiments, use math in real world contexts, and use technology to enhance mathematics. Adventures! is a privilege, and it will allow students to take math to a higher level.
Basic Math Facts: Our math department is very excited to be working together on a variety of common assessments throughout this year. We will be testing students on basic multiplication and division facts every Monday. To meet standards, students will need to perform 90% or higher on these tests ‑‑ so, dust off those flash cards!!
POW’s (Problems of the Week): Problems of the week will actually be assigned every two weeks. POW’s will be given to students on Fridays and will need to be complete in a two week’s time. (A grading rubric will be discussed later.)
Portfolios: Each students will have his/her own portfolio which will contain random samples of his/her own work. The portfolio will contain some assignments, some quizzes and all tests. The main purpose of this is to see the progress of the students from the beginning of the quarter to the end. Portfolios will also allow parents to see their child’s work. These portfolios can be seen at any time at the parents’ or guardians’ request.
No Homework Fridays!: Yes, that is correct! Students will not receive any homework on Fridays – so, make sure you enjoy your weekends!
