CHALLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL

CORE 6-3

Dear Family,

At the beginning of the school year we would like to take the opportunity to give a brief explanation of how our core will function and our policies on classroom behavior and homework.

Each student is assigned to one of three core teachers.  The students will be changing classes with their core teachers for Science, Math, and Social Studies.  The core concept makes it possible for the teachers to have a flexible plan to meet the students’ needs.

In order to assure your child the best possible learning atmosphere, we have adopted the following classroom behavior rules:

Students will:

1.     Be Respectful

2.     Be Responsible

3.     Be There – Be Ready

Infractions of classroom rules will be recorded on a discipline card (“D” Card).  If five infractions are recorded, a 15-minute detention will be issued.  When a student accumulates three classroom detentions within a quarter, an office referral will be issued with points deducted from their PBIS bank.  Serious rule infractions, as identified in the handbook, however, may require immediate referral to the office.

Homework is an important part of your student’s education.  Each student is responsible for keeping track of homework and other essential school information.  Homework will be assigned on a regular basis.  The majority of the work will be given Monday through Thursday; occasionally the class schedule will dictate that homework assignments be completed over the weekend.

The amount of homework that your child has will depend on the material that is being covered in a particular class, the amount of time given in class to work on an assignment, and the amount of effort your student puts in while at school.

If a student fails to turn in an assignment on the date that it is due, they will have until the end of the school day to complete it before receiving a “0” for that assignment. No make-up work will be accepted.  The only exceptions to this will be in the case of illness or a family emergency.  In those instances a reasonable amount of time will be given to complete the work.  If your student is unable to complete the work as assigned, we ask that you send a note stating the nature of the illness or emergency.

Extra credit may be available in certain subjects, but it will not be given to take the place of regular assignments which have been missed.  If your student needs extra help with an assignment they may meet with any of their teachers before or after school.

Grading at Challand Middle School is on a quarter (9 week) system.  There will be a mid-term report and a final report mailed home each quarter.  Please call the school office to find the expected arrival date.

Parent conferences will be held in November and February.  Of course you are welcome to call school or send a note at any time regarding your student’s progress.  Teachers can be reached by e-mail at kreiley@sterlingschools.org, jschriner@sterlingschools.org and alandis@sterlingschools.org.

It is our hope that this letter will help you and your student have a better understanding of our expectations.  We feel that this will help them to have a more successful school year.

In conclusion, we are asking that you discuss these expectations with your student and keep this information for reference purposes throughout the year.  We are requesting that you and your student sign the last page and return it to school.

                                                                        Yours truly,

                                                                        Mrs. Joan Schriner
