Section 8:  Family and Community Involvement

A broad based of stakeholders reflects the entire community and includes staff, students, parents/families, business and community representatives, and school board members.  Stakeholders are substantively involved in the development, implementation, and review of the plan; parent involvement practices and compacts; and communications about student achievement.  Family strategies in the action plan (5.0) provide academic enrichment and learning support to help students achieve performance targets.

SECTION 8.1 DATA USE

Parents are encouraged to become members of the school improvement team, site council, and parent-teacher organization.  Survey results and ongoing data from school improvement efforts are shared will all parents through home mailings, website updates, and Sterling School District Channel 11.

Use of data on parent/family involvement and/or satisfaction to inform strategies is extensive.

8.2 STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT IN SIP PROCESS

This document was created through a team process involving stakeholders that include administration, faculty, support staff, community members, and parents.  The team of stakeholders will have many opportunities to change, improve, and update this school improvement plan.   Quarterly reviews of our progress toward meeting the goals set in this plan are shared with all stakeholders through newsletters, website updates, faculty meetings, open houses, parent-teacher conferences, and Sterling School District Channel 11.

Level 3 Implementation

A broad range of community stakeholders is involved in the development, implementation, and review of the plan.

8.3 COMMUNICATION OF SIP PROGRESS

  • Progress reports are sent to homes every 4 weeks to update parents of current grades, classroom behaviors and attendance.
  • A newsletter is sent home every two months to inform parents of upcoming events, informational articles (i.e. gang issues, homework strategies, drug abuse, etc…), and data updates regarding our progress in meeting our school improvement plan goals.
  • The middle school has a web-page (sterlingschools.org) that is updated weekly with event schedules, teacher contacts, school report card information, and other school related information along with school improvement progress checks.

Level 3 Implementation

Parents/families will receive frequent, extensive progress reports (from the school and classroom teachers) related to performance targets, strategies, and activities in the plan. 

8.4 ROLE OF FAMILY/COMMUNITY IN THE ACTION PLAN (5.0)

The family and community have a significant role at Challand Middle School.  

The parent-teacher organization has helped to raise money for the support of academic programs at our school.  Parent leaders also organize student activities and help find parent volunteers.  

The Sterling Schools Foundations, a community agency, helps to support CMS through donations and mini-grants that support our school improvement initiatives.

The Sterling Township supports CMS students through an extensive after school tutoring program and financial support for program supplies.

Parents are specifically involved in our action plan for the 2006-2007 school year through the family reading night that will take place in May 2007 and the monthly parent empowerment nights that will take place throughout the school year.

The role of family/community members in activities in the action plan is extensive, specific, and clear.

8.5 ROLE OF FAMILY/COMMUNITY IN SUPPORT OF STUDENT LEARNING

The parent-teacher organization supports various supports our school through fundraising efforts.  Each teacher core contacts at least 6 parents weekly to involve them in the learning process.  Families are invited to parent-teacher conference nights twice yearly along with a family reading night and other special activities such as the Challand Middle School talent show and the yearly CMS open house night.

The plan includes extensive involvement of families and communities in supporting learning.

8.6 PROCEDURES/PRACTICES/COMPACTS

Parents play an active role on the school improvement team and parent-teacher organization.  They help analyze school data and create action plans.  Parents sign a yearly compact regarding the CMS disciplinary expectations and procedures.

Parents have extensive involvement in the development and review of the school parental procedures, practices, and compacts.
