Hold quarterly writing prompts to practice student extended response to content area reading.  Use a school-= wide common scoring rubric.   Use collaborative scoring with cores. 

š        This acti= vity will not begin until 2nd quarter in order to give our 6th= grade students ample time to adjust to CMS and learn our method for writi= ng this type of essay. 

 

Use= a school-wide reading strategies calendar.

š        The readi= ng strategies calendar is complete. &n= bsp;

š        We also c= reated a Classroom Instruction that Works calendar. 

 

Use interactive readers for language arts instruction in 6th-8th grades in order to give students concrete models for reading strategies.<= o:p>

š        All regul= ar education students are using the Interactive Reader in place of the langu= age arts textbook.

 

Use= the SRA Corrective Reading Program for special education students.

š        Special education students who tested into the program are placed into the appropriate SRA decoding and comprehension levels.

 

Cre= ate an instructional literature class for special education students to take the place of social studies at 6th grade, encore at 7th grade, or science at 8th grade if the IEP team believes the content of the regular education class is not appropriate for the student= .

š        The instructional literature class has been created.   Teachers are meeting weekl= y with the CMS literacy coach in order to plan instruction.  There are 6 classes with 45 stud= ents.

 

Use= the Accelerated Reader program to motivate students to read.

š        The Accel= erated Reader program is up and running! &= nbsp; The school store has been open twice already this year.   Please see the attached da= ta.

 

 

Hol= d a family reading night in order to increase parent involvement at CMS. 

š        We held a family reading night on Thursday, October 18th.   There were 79 people in attendance with 31 CMS students at the evening event.   Students also had the oppo= rtunity to participate without coming to CMS by reading at home or by going to the library.   <= /span>

Cre= ate math tutoring opportunities for 7th and 8th grade at-risk students.   At-risk math students will be assigned to a 9th period class for math tutor= ing with a grade level math teacher.

š        This acti= vity is underway.   Students= who need extra help in math ask for a pass and are able to visit their math teacher during 9th period for extra tutoring. 

 

Cre= ate STAR math classes for 6th-8th grade special education students.

š        This acti= vity is underway.   Students= were evaluated for the program last spring after completing a math assessment.  

 

Cre= ate a STAR math encore class for 7th grade regular education students.   =

š        This acti= vity is underway.   Please s= ee the attached sheet that explains the program. 

 

Con= tinue to evaluate and revise curriculum for the 12-week Fine Arts Geometry class at the 6th grade level. 

š        The secon= d year of Fine Arts Geometry has begun. &n= bsp; Students rotate into the 12-week course one time a year. 

Imp= lement the AVID program. 

š        The AVID = team met on September 6th and October 4th.

š        The Sterl= ing Township is financially supporting two AVID tutors who have been hired through SVCC Americorp. 

š        AVID stud= ents were on the JR show on WSDR on September 26th. 

š        AVID stud= ents sold school spirit materials at two SHS football games in order to raise money for a field trip.

š        The AVID = team created a display showing the colleges that CMS staff members attended.

š        AVID/coll= ege t-shirt days are being held school-wide every Wednesday.

š        AVID stud= ents and their families will have supper together on November 6th followed by a bus ride together to SVCC for the college night.   There will be 80 colleges there. 

Con= tinue to use common school-wide expectations for proper binder and locker organization.   Continu= e to check planners for proper use.

š        We are continuing to use the school-wide rubric that was created last year.   Binder and locker organiza= tion activities are completed periodically during 9th period STAR classes. 

 

Con= tinue common school-wide study skills lessons.   Focus on one to two skills= each quarter.  =

š        The focus= for this quarter has been organization.  Our team is working on a staff survey to assess the level of implementation.

 

Con= tinue offering a before and after school homework lab in the CMS cafeteria.

š        Before and after school homework lab is being offered.   Most students attend in the morning session.

 

Con= tinue the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.

š        The bully= ing prevention team met over the summer to plan events for this school year.<= o:p>

š        A student assembly was held on August 31st with Eddie Slowokowski.  The topic of the assembly was bu= llying prevention.

š        All 9th period STAR teachers were given a packet of bullying preventions to prese= nt to their classes before the end of October.

 

Con= tinue the PBIS:   Positive Ba= sed Interventions and Supports Program.

š        The PBIS = team meets every two weeks and updates discipline data weekly.   The team forms plans for improvement based upon the current data.=   Please see that attached information regarding discipline data for= the 07-08 school year. 

 

Con= tinue the Check and Connect Program. 

š        There are= 32 students at CMS who participate in the “Check and Connect” program.   The students= check in with their assigned mentor every morning.  The mentors each give their stud= ent a “pep talk” and a new check and connect form.   (See the attached example.= )  The student then takes the form = from class to class, receiving a rating of 0, 1, or 2 at the end of each perio= d.   At the end of the day, the student returns to his or her mentor to review the day and receive positi= ve feedback.  Students also earn coupons that can be spent at the CMS school store.   The PBIS team keeps track = of the progress of each student on this program by graphing their weekly points.   (Please see t= he attached example.)  Students= with a drop in points are referred to the PBIS STAT team for further intervent= ion.

š        The team believes that we need to assess the current level of access to the CMS library.   <= /span>

š        The AVID = team will begin meeting in the mornings to encourage attendance of staff membe= rs who are involved in after school tutoring activities.

š        The team decided to make a staff survey regarding PBIS lesson, bullying lesson, and homework completion.

 

3.      = Look= ing to the future and reviewing areas for improvement

š        The team believes that the AR program should have been started earlier in the scho= ol year, but there were technical issues that needed to be resolved.

š        The team = is concerned about how to involve music students in organizing their binders= and lockers.   This in norm= ally done during 9th period while they are in class.
