Since its inception in 1989, the Sterling Schools Foundation has focused its attention on providing some of the “extras” needed to offer students a robust, well-rounded educational experience. The construction and operation of Centennial Auditorium and our Mini-grant program are two examples of those efforts. As a result of Sterling’s struggling economy, which has negatively affected the school district’s budget, SSF has been called upon to fund educational necessities. Examples include the Sterling High School Academic Booster Club, which provides funding for clubs and organizations at the high school that were cut in 2003 and our new Bucks for Books program to assist with the purchase of textbooks and library books district-wide.
With the failure of a third property tax increase referendum this past April (two attempts failed in 2003), the school district was faced with additional program cuts on top of the nearly $5,000,000 already slashed since 2003. At the top of the list of potential cuts are fine arts and athletic programs, which cost the district nearly $800,000 to offer each year.
While arts and athletic programs are not required to meet national and state standards (No Child Left Behind, etc.), SSF recognizes the vital importance they play in the educational process and to the future of our students and community. To help ensure these programs continue to be offered, the Foundation’s Board of Directors has decided to embark on a new fundraising endeavor – the Sterling Schools A+ Initiative.
